Chartres Cathedral has many expenses. They reflect what happens there every day, throughout the year: an extreme variety of activities and events. Celebrations, pilgrimages, concerts, conferences, large screen projections, inspired by Marian spirituality, allow Chartres to remain faithful to the will of the builders.
It is difficult to imagine all the costs related to such a building: opening, reception and maintenance staff, organists and choirmaster, lighting, sound system, signage, objects of worship, daily maintenance, communication, media contact…
The Rectorate of the Cathedral lives only from donations made by visitors, parishioners and pilgrims: quests, devotional watches, offerings. No subsidy from the State or local authorities contributes to the Cathedral’s finances. Public funding and patronage are used for restoration work.
