Chartres, 1000 years of Pilgrimage: join history!

September 8 2024 – August 15 2025

For over a thousand years, the Virgin Mary’s veil in the cathedral has attracted pilgrims from all over the world. Over a million pilgrims and visitors converged on the cathedral in 2022, making it a major shrine in France and Europe.

“If pilgrimages have shaped the city and the diocese for a thousand years, it’s time to imagine the pilgrimages of tomorrow, in all their forms. Mary shows the closeness of God through her Son to all mankind, giving us the opportunity to draw closer to him and to each other. To walk towards Chartres is to walk with Mary, towards Christ” – Monseigneur Christory, Bishop of Chartres.

About Chartres Cathedral
Notre-Dame de Chartres Cathedral is a major pilgrimage site dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Internationally renowned, it was the first cathedral in France to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in 1979. It has stood the test of time, resisting fire and war, but always welcoming pilgrims. Its crypt, one of the longest in Europe, has been welcoming pilgrims since the autumn of 1024, when the Virgin Mary took care of them.
Located on the route to Santiago de Compostela and visible from over 30 km away, it attracts pilgrims and draws them together.
The cathedral’s architecture, stained-glass windows and statues are a model of Gothic architecture.
It remains a space of silence and prayer that communicates peace.
