Concert by the Maîtrise & Ensemble instrumental of Chartres cathedral, Friday June 23 at 9:00 pm

The musical program for this concert turns to the motets of the Renaissance masters, considered to be the “treasures” of sacred music. These pieces bear witness to the genius of 16th and 17th century European composers, who used their art to highlight biblical verses.
From 1723, Johann Sebastian Bach was stationed in Leipzig, where he composed a different cantata for each liturgical Sunday. Among the best-known, number 4 is inspired by the theme of the Easter sequence (Victimae Paschali Laudes).

This concert will also be given on Saturday, June 24, 2023 at 9:00 pm, in the church of Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul in Gallardon.

A brief history
Chartres Cathedral’s choir school is one of the oldest in the world. A text from 485 attests to the existence, under bishop Flavius, of a choir of young clerics singing the offices. However, the essential impetus came from Saint Fulbert (960-1028). A composer himself, Fulbert became bishop in 1006. He rebuilt the cathedral after the fire of 1020 and developed the great cathedral school.

Nowadays
The Maîtrise de la cathédrale is a mixed group of children and adults. In addition to its primary role of enlivening celebrations by nurturing the treasure trove of sacred music, it enables each member to develop his or her full potential through singing, acquiring a broad musical culture and a thorough grounding in musical training and vocal technique.
