Symposium “The Virgin's Veil at the Peril of History” - Saturday, September 14, 2024
Mon. 19 Aug. / CultureThe Virgin’s Veil holds a very special place in Chartres. Given to Chartres in 876 by Charles the Bald, King of France, it has attracted millions of pilgrims ever since. When the cathedral burned down in 1194, it was thought that the precious relic would be lost forever. But the priests took the reliquary and fled to the crypt. But where did the veil really come from? Can we be sure of its authenticity? What is the historical background to this precious cloth, venerated in Chartres for 12 centuries?
As the crypt’s Jubilee festivities get underway, we invite you to join us on Saturday September 14 at the Hôtellerie Saint-Yves (3 rue des Acacias, 28000 Chartres) for our colloquium: The Virgin’s Veil at the Peril of History.
From 9.15am to 12.15pm, then from 2.00pm to 4.30pm.
Free admission, with recommended offering.
The colloquium is in French langage only
