Service Accueil et Visites
of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Chartres

Mandated by the Bishop and recognized for the historic monuments, the Service Accueil et Visites of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Chartres was created in 1983.
Their mission is to manage and interpret the value of heritage of the Cathedral of Chartres. The 1857 management described this value as “artistic structure, story-telling and religious sanctuary that speaks to our senses, in heart and spirit.”
The office works with everyone from tourists to pilgrims who wish to discover the Cathedral
. They can give general tours or more in-depth thematic ones.

The Service Accueil et Visites welcomes you and presents different facets of the Cathedral whether your interest is historical, artistic or religious. There is something for everyone to discover!

Many public visits are given of the Cathedral and crypt each day, with times depending on the season.
The visits are given by members of the Service Accueil-Visites. Crypt tours are only given in French, but the 2:45 pm English Cathedral tour also highlights the crypt. Tours of the crypt are given daily except:  December 25, January 1, during holidays and religious events.

You can also book a reservation for a private group. These are organized by the Service Accueil-Visites along with you to customize the best experience for your group. Factors such as thematic content, duration, and language are some of the customizable options. Available languages include:

French

English

German

Spanish

Italian

Japanese

en hollandais

en portugais

en russe

Tours can be adapted for school group visits (primary schools, secondary schools, universities) with specific learning objectives from teachers..

The Service Accueil-Visites, under the responsibility of the rector, is a continuation of the visitor services managed by Marie Houvet, a guide at the Cathedral for 40 years and daughter of Etienne Houvet, guardian of the Cathedral during the inter-war period. Mr. Houvet, along with Canon Delaporte, largely contributed to the radiance of the Cathedral through his writings and photographs.

The office is composed of employees and over 40 volunteers:
- A team of guides that give conference tours, all year long.
- A team that gives tours of the crypt.
- A team that welcomes at the entrance of the Cathedral, during Easter and All Saint’s Day, helping visitors, answering general questions – practical information, cultural or spiritual in nature.
The driving force behind the success of these teams is the diversity of its members, coming from different backgrounds who can adapt and relate to all kinds of visitors (young and old, experts and novices in art history…) and meet their expectations. Training is continuous, permitting guides to deepen their analysis and keep up to date with ongoing research.

Objectives:
Welcome visitors and pilgrims, individually or in groups, of all ages and origins. Visitor engagement is encouraged in such an exceptional place!
Give information:  historic, artistic, spiritual.
Explain the profound significance of the stained-glass windows and sculptures, the influence of the words of the Bible, and its significance in symbols.
Evoke a living life of the sanctuary:  celebration and prayer.
Understand the techniques and building aesthetics of the 13th century.
To make the experience come to life, inviting visitors to open their gaze to a true contemplation of the artistic and historical value presented in the Cathedral.
Respond to the needs of each visitor with pleasure.
To enhance scholastic programs, teaching objectives or catechisms.
